Nova in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Active Dates: Feb. 9, 2009 – Feb. 9, 2009
Abstract:
This campaign focuses on observing a nova in the Large Magellanic Cloud [N LMC 2009] discovered by W. Liller. The nova was identified on 2009 February 05.067 UT with a magnitude of 10.6, and has rapidly faded to magnitude 11.8 as of 2009 February 07.092 UT. It was confirmed using spectra obtained by H.E. Bond et al. at the SMARTS 1.5-m telescope, showing broad H-gamma and H-delta lines.
Justification:
The close proximity of Nova LMC 2009 to the coordinates of Nova LMC 1971 may indicate that they share the same progenitor and that this is a recurrent nova. Observations will help confirm this possibility and provide more data on the behavior of the nova.
