Proposal

R Coronae Borealis variables are astrophysically interesting objects that still have mysteries connected with them; for example, two quite different scenarios for their genesis have been proposed (Clayton 2012). They, including their associated type the DY Persei stars, are a class of variables that historically have been known in small numbers but in recent years the number of known and suspected RCB stars has started to increase, as large-scale photometric surveys are analysed.

In a recent study, using analysis of the ASAS survey, it was proposed that the object ASAS 053302+1808.0 might be an RCB/DY Per star (Miller et al 2012). It is a known carbon star that has shown multiple declines. The suggestion for this observing run is for follow up-monitoring of this proposed candidate for an RCB/DY Per star in B, V and R with observations done regularly for one or two observing seasons. One observation in three colours per week.

The observations will be measured using the VPhot software. A sequence of comparison stars has recently been set up by the AAVSO charts and sequences team. The observations will be archived in the AAVSO International Database. If something interesting shows up – ie., the dips found in ASAS survey data are repeated – a contact will be taken with the researchers that found this candidate RCB/DY Per star.

Approved. This seems like a good match for SRO.
