Proposal | Following our scientific paper, the Victoria Observatory (Canada) (DAO) agreed to take high-definition spectra of the star IT HER on the nights of June 13, 14, and 15. We had planned to do simultaneous multifilter photometry (B, V, R, I) at our observatory in southern Quebec, but we hadn't considered the forest fires in western Canada, which are causing smoke in our skies. Is there any possibility that one of the AAVSOnet observatories could serve as a backup for us and take B and V filter images to obtain the light curves for those nights? Thanks in advance! |

IOW, you want a full night time series on all three nights? NH is not that far from Quebec! NM has the monsoon!

Hi
I understand that the conditions aren't ideal... and it's a bit last-minute.
We had planned to make these observations at our observatory, but a broken dome and then smoke from the west prevented us from doing anything. Dr. Nelson from Bishop's University has offered to follow up from the Mont-Mégantic OMM.
Currently, I'm waiting for the DAO to begin the high-resolution spectroscopy observations. As soon as I hear back, I'll be able to send them to you so we can optimize the observations.- (19967) Jean-Bruno Desrosiers — June 5, 2025, 6:47 p.m.
Aren't there other telescopes available further south?

What scope did you have in mind?

Although I volunteered on the SRO from 2016 to 2020, I'm not very familiar with the AAVSOnet's or the observatories' selection criteria. I was simply asking if a telescope located further south would be available, less affected by the smoke, like Quebec and the NH, and would provide more optimal observations. Looking at the network's interactive map, FSM-SRO50 (which was formerly the SRO) seems ideal, otherwise BSN-TX or NM.
As you mentioned, the NH is indeed very close to Quebec, which is currently at the mercy of the smoke. The purpose of the request is to provide photometric support for the DAO's spectroscopic observations in order to obtain a more complete record of one or more cycles of this binary star with a period of 0.339396 days.
At the time of writing, I have not received any feedback from the DAO regarding the precise times of the observations.
Thanks in advance!

As I mentioned in comment 1, BSM-NM is an alternative but it has to deal with the monsoon! MPO61 is not a reasonable option for such time series.
I have committed a test plan to both NH and NM. See and report how exposures work.
Is DAO really going to image on 3 separate days? For how long each day?
- (4726) Kenneth Menzies — June 6, 2025, 7:24 p.m.
BSM-TX and SRO050 are no longer active. Take a look at the AAVSONet forum where Arne reports status of scopes.

Thanks for your inquiry.
For this campaign, we actually have three nights where the DAO will observe IT HER for spectroscopy. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes, or three 30-minute spectra. The goal of the request is to obtain light curves of the star in order to obtain the true phase of the star when taking the spectra.
I've written to the DAO again to obtain a horizon of observation times. I expect a response shortly.- (19967) Jean-Bruno Desrosiers — June 8, 2025, 1:27 p.m.
Hi, I received answer from DAO:
Hi Jean-Bruno,We have the entire nights on June 13 and 15 for your program, and we have from 11:15 Pacific Time onwards on June 14. You can check the sunset and sunrise times on the CADC page for approx dome opening and closing times which are followed by flat collection and waiting for the sky to be dark - observations start approx at 10pm for those days (I can give a more precise estimation tomorrow).
Thanks for your patience.
Cheers,
Deb

Is it possible to do with a telescope in the same time zone?
Thank in advance!- (4726) Kenneth Menzies — June 9, 2025, 6:08 p.m.
Jean-Bruno:
What are you going to tell them about 'the same time zone'?
- (19967) Jean-Bruno Desrosiers — June 9, 2025, 6:21 p.m.
The DAO starts its images at 10 PM (Pacific Time), so -7 UTC.
I should have said as close to that time zone as possible.- (19967) Jean-Bruno Desrosiers — June 11, 2025, 2:18 a.m.
Hi, A response would be appreciated.
- (4726) Kenneth Menzies — June 11, 2025, 1:29 p.m.
As mentioned above, I have committed the plan to both NH and NM. If you want to meet their time zone restriction, I will run it on NM only. I'm not sure that this restriction is critical. Just need to image at the same time as their spectral imaging. Of course, there is a better chance for this if we use NM (closer time zone) rather than NH. But NM may be more likely impacted by poor weather (monsoon) at this time? Need some luck.
BTW, have you seen your test images yet in your vphot account? You should have received an email?
Questions?
- (19967) Jean-Bruno Desrosiers — June 11, 2025, 6:22 p.m.
I checked the weather forecast for New Mexico and everything suggests the sky is with us (https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/az/phoenix).
Let's go with that and cross our fingers! As for APHOT, yes, I checked, but I don't have any images and no email.
Merci!

I'm a little worried...
We haven't had any confirmation from Friday night, the 13th, or from tonight... On the website: http://images.aavsonet.aavso.org/bsm_nm/, there are no images before 2025-06-11...
Nor on the FTP site "ftp://ftp.aavsonet.aavso.org" in my DJED directory...It's true that it's early... But there's only one more night... Can you reassure us?
- (2108) Arne Henden — June 15, 2025, 1:49 p.m.
We have data from last night for BSM_NH. BSM_NM did not seem to run the last two nights; I'm checking with the operator. BSM_NH looks like it will be observing again tonight, if you believe the forecasts.
Arne
