Proposal | Students from my high school (Jasper Place High School), want to do follow up observations of exoplanet TOI-1417 (HD 212393). These observations needed for their astronomy course project, which will help them gain a deeper understanding of astronomy and exoplanets. The star (HD 212393) is at: RA 22h23m18.07s It has a TESS magnitude of 8.5 and the brightness of the star to varies by around 1% as the planet transits in front of it. They’ve determined five potential observing windows (in UT) around New Mexico between now and the end of November, which will be listed below. They would like 30 second exposures clear and/or blue-blocking filters. If Sloan I and R filters are available, those would be preferable. Begin date: 10/03/2025 12:38 Begin date: 10/06/2025 02:13 Begin date: 10/09/2025 04:00 Begin date: 10/12/2025 05:42 Begin date: 11/15/2025 12:33 |

Ian, we have been looking at this target in detail and you have a bit of a challenge in front of you. This star has pulsations that are about an order of magnitude larger than the transits. I reduced the TESS sector 83 data this morning and I'll send you some plots by email that show the transits compared to the pulsations. This will be a tough target to do from the ground. You will probably need 5-6 hours per transit to get enough data outside of the transits to get a handle on the pulsation component. Look for an email shortly.

I spoke with the students and they want to go ahead with HD 212393. They are a bit concerned about the amount of time we have left in the term and would like to see what sort of results they can get from this.

Ok, I'll mark it as approved and Ken will get it into the system.

Committed to NM in SR filter. A test exposure first.
