Rare outburst of 0846+58 BZ Ursae Majoris

Active Dates: Oct. 26, 1992 – Nov. 5, 1992

Abstract:

David York from Abiquiu, NM, reported a bright outburst (likely a superoutburst) of the dwarf nova BZ UMa, with an observation on October 26.25 UT at magnitude 10.5. The last confirmed outburst was in April 1991, observed by Gerry Dyck, Patrick Schmeer, and Haakon Dahle. If this outburst is a superoutburst, it could provide valuable data on superhumps.

Justification:

If this outburst is indeed a superoutburst, i.e., it lasts about 10 days, it will be extremely valuable to see if superhumps (small-amplitude periodic oscillations) can be observed visually. In order to look for superhumps, observations should be made every 10 minutes. Very accurate recording of the times of observation is essential.
