Alert Notice 219: Minor outburst of 0324+43 GK Persei AND 0059+53 Nova Cassiopeiae 1995 [V723 Cas]

Active Dates: Feb. 19, 1996 – Feb. 28, 1996

Abstract:

The old nova GK Per (Nova Per 1901) has gone into a minor outburst for the first time since 1992. After notice by observers, astronomers at the University of Leicester scheduled the satellite X-ray Timing Explorer (XTE) to observe GK Per on February 27, and this observation was carried out. The Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite ASCA has been scheduled to observe GK Per on March 4. A second XTE observation is expected simultaneously with the ASCA one.

Justification:

To monitor and study the minor outburst of the old nova GK Per to understand its behavior and trigger observations with satellites like XTE and ASCA.
