Extreme fading of 1921+50 CH Cygni AND Reminder - Request to monitor 2138+43 SS Cygni for Observations with HST, EUVE, and RXTE

Active Dates: May 3, 1996 – June 25, 1996

Abstract:

The brightest Z And-type symbiotic star known, CH Cyg, is undergoing a significant fading. Observers with photoelectric photometers and/or CCD's are encouraged to perform multicolor photometry during this period. Additionally, 2138+43 SS Cygni should be monitored for brightening for observations with HST, EUVE, and RXTE.

Justification:

To observe the unprecedented fading of CH Cyg since it is the faintest it has been since 1929 and to monitor SS Cyg for possible brightening and inform relevant astronomers for scheduled observations with satellites.
