Extreme faintness and unusual behavior of 0058+40 RX Andromedae

Active Dates: Nov. 18, 1996 – Dec. 2, 1996

Abstract:

The dwarf nova (Z Cam subclass) cataclysmic variable RX And is undergoing a period of unprecedented faintness, with its present visual magnitude approximately 15.4. This behavior has been compared to historical data dating back to September 1922 from the AAVSO International Database.

Justification:

Observations dating back over 70 years show RX And's current faintness and unusual behavior, motivating further study as it oscillates between magnitudes 15.6 and 15.3.
