Alert Notice 345: Request to monitor cataclysmic variables for radio observations

Active Dates: Feb. 21, 2007 – March 21, 2007

Abstract:

Dr. Christian Knigge, University of Southampton, England, has requested our assistance in monitoring ten dwarf novae cataclysmic variables as part of a search for radio jet formation during outbursts. The aim is to observe a dwarf nova outburst within six hours of the outburst onset using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) and the Jodrell Bank MERLIN telescope to study the behavior of dwarf novae outbursts in the radio region of the spectrum, and determine whether CV systems can form radio jets similar to those observed in X-ray bursters and other X-ray binaries.

Justification:

Rapid optical detection of an outburst onset will be used to trigger target-of-opportunity observations with both radio telescopes. Continuous optical monitoring and rapid reporting of these dwarf novae is requested to help determine the behavior in the radio region and the potential formation of radio jets.
