REQUEST TO OBSERVE HMXBs IN SUPPORT OF RADIAL VELOCITY OBSERVATIONS

Active Dates: April 1, 2007 – May 31, 2007

Abstract:

Dr. Gordon Sarty has requested assistance in obtaining BVRI photometry for four High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) for April and May 2007. He will acquire spectroscopy with the DAO 1.85-m Plaskett telescope to measure radial velocities and determine the orbital periods of the HMXBs. Optical photometry will help reveal periods and variations due to mass transfer and other effects.

Justification:

Amateur observations of HMXBs are valuable for finding the true distribution of orbital periods and interpreting spectroscopic data.
