Request for monitoring of SS Cygni in support of European VLBI radio observations

Active Dates: Aug. 19, 2011 – Dec. 31, 2012

Abstract:

Following their successful multiwavelength observing campaign on the dwarf nova SS Cygni in April 2010, Dr. James Miller-Jones and colleagues have scheduled a follow-up multiwavelength campaign. They are requesting assistance from AAVSO members to monitor SS Cygni, particularly around potential trigger dates for the European VLBI Network observations, to determine the state of SS Cygni.

Justification:

SS Cygni is the class prototype of dwarf novae and the brightest dwarf nova in the sky. The follow-up observations with the European VLBI Network aim to rigorously constrain the distance and proper motion of SS Cygni, as previous data implied discrepancies in the currently accepted parameters.
