Alert Notice 448: Request for observations of V455 AND in support of HST observations

Active Dates: Sept. 12, 2011 – Oct. 10, 2011

Abstract:

Dr. Paula Szkody (University of Washington) has requested the help of AAVSO observers in monitoring the WZ Sge-type cataclysmic variable V455 And in support of Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectroscopic observations scheduled for 11:31:18-15:07:25 2011 September 25 UT (the night of Saturday, September 24/25) (JD 2455829.98007-.13015). Nightly observations are requested beginning immediately and continuing through October 10.

Justification:

The primary purpose of the monitoring is to know whether V455 And is in quiescence; if it is in outburst it will be too bright for the HST instrumentation. The decision whether to go forward with the HST observations will be made the evening of Friday, September 23/24, so the nights of September 22/23, 23/24, and 24/25 are the most critical for observations to be reported.
