Monitoring of HD 5980 requested for multiwavelength campaign

Active Dates: Oct. 19, 2012 – Jan. 31, 2013

Abstract:

Dr. Noel Richardson (Universite de Montreal, formerly at Georgia State University) has requested monitoring of the Small Magellanic Cloud eclipsing binary HD 5980 (in Tucana) as part of a multiwavelength campaign he is coordinating to study this unusual system.

Justification:

Simultaneous ground-based photometry from AAVSO expert observers with preference to filtered CCD measurements (UBVRI or any subset of these) will allow full update of the orbital ephemeris. High cadence observations on the nights of the eclipses and good coverage on remaining nights will help detect a period change in the system, informing us about the mass loss in this massive, luminous star system dominated by strong winds.
