Monitoring needed for TW Hya for HST and TESS observations

Active Dates: March 1, 2021 – April 5, 2021

Abstract:

Dr. Fred Walter requests AAVSO assistance in providing multicolor CCD photometry of the T Tau star TW Hya in support of upcoming HST and TESS observations. The HST will monitor TW Hya and obtain ultra-violet spectra while TESS will observe the region nearly continuously.

Justification:

Are stellar variations due to enhanced accretion events or long-lived flares causing the star to become bluer? Are they due to variable circumstellar extinction causing the star to become redder? Are they due to obscuration of the photosphere by optically-thick irregularities in the circumstellar disk causing no color change? Changes in extinction are particularly important for interpreting sensitive UV spectra.
