HM Sge monitoring needed for HST and SOFIA observations

Active Dates: March 21, 2021 – April 14, 2021

Abstract:

The purpose of this campaign is to support a joint SOFIA/HST Directors’ Discretionary program targeting HM Sge. Observations will be obtained at wavelengths from the far-UV to the mid-IR. The AAVSO simultaneous data will help constrain models of the system. The observations will also alert us to any sudden activity that may pose a safety issue for the FUV detector. We are targeting a post-outburst (1975) symbiotic Mira system that displays a wide and diverse range of active astrophysical phenomena.

Justification:

The broad capabilities of these instruments allow us to study the overall impact of the outburst on the Mira’s circumstellar dust shell, the molecular flows, and the compact nebula surrounding the central engine. Observations are requested near the time of the HST and SOFIA observations to get a consistent snapshot of the spectral energy distribution, important for modeling the system. We are also interested in monitoring the system every night for the preceding week to look for any sudden changes in brightness.
