Monitoring requested for 11 dwarf novae in support of HST observations in 2021-2022

Active Dates: Nov. 1, 2021 – Sept. 30, 2022

Abstract:

AAVSO observers' assistance is requested in monitoring 11 dwarf novae cataclysmic variables in support of observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The monitoring ensures observations are obtained during quiescence to avoid damaging the detectors of the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph due to exposure to too much light.

Justification:

Accreting white dwarfs are ideal for testing models of binary evolution and understanding the formation channels of gravitational wave sources. Observations are necessary to accurately measure their fundamental parameters, providing constraints on angular momentum loss mechanisms and connections to Type Ia Supernova explosions.
