Photometry and spectroscopy requested for ASAS J060415+1245.9

Active Dates: Nov. 14, 2022 – Dec. 31, 2022

Abstract:

Monitoring the rotating variable ASAS J060415+1245.9 (HD 251108) in response to exceptional flaring activity detected by LEIA, NICER, and Swift. The star is a K2 giant known for rotational variability and is observable from the ground.

Justification:

The X-ray instruments observed one of the largest flares ever studied in detail from a K-type giant. Spectroscopic observations are needed to resolve emission lines (R > 5000) and determine their behavior after the flare. Photometric observations will help monitor the chromosphere and any unusual spot patterns that affect optical variability.
