Monitoring requested for 11 dwarf novae in support of HST observations in 2023-2024
Abstract:
The campaign involves monitoring 11 dwarf novae cataclysmic variables to support Hubble Space Telescope observations. The main aim is to obtain ultraviolet spectroscopy of accreting white dwarfs using the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph onboard the HST to measure their effective temperatures, masses, and accretion rates.
Justification:
Because of the extremely variable nature of accreting white dwarfs, monitoring is crucial to ensure observations are obtained during quiescence to prevent damage to the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph detectors. Ongoing monitoring builds the light curve, allowing the scheduled HST observations to be placed in context of the behavior of the target. A positive V observation 24 hours before the scheduled HST time is crucial for the HST team to make a final go/nogo decision.

Co-Authorship
Observers are not eligible for co-authorship.
Additional Observer Input:
Nightly snapshots in V are requested. LL Lyr and SDSS J152509.57+360054.5 (Boo) may be observed with HST in October 2024. The table of all 2023-2024 targets and approximate HST observation windows is given in the original version of this observing notice (https://www.aavso.org/aavso-alert-notice-838-backup-copy). When the observing window for each target is known and then the exact time is announced, the forum will be updated.
