V1159 Ori coverage needed to monitor for outburst to trigger radio observation

Active Dates: April 1, 2025 – April 15, 2025

Abstract:

Dr. Christian Knigge (University of Southampton) requests coverage of V1159 Ori, an ER UMa-type cataclysmic variable (a subtype of SU UMa CVs), from now through 2025 April 15. A radio observation is needed urgently, and this can only be triggered when the system is in outburst. Thus, it is essential to know when an outburst occurs. Coverage in V is requested; CMOS/DSLR observations are also welcome, as are CV and visual.

Justification:

Knowledge of the state of V1159 Ori - quiescence or in outburst - is essential to be able to trigger a request for radio observations, which are urgently needed for research purposes. Observations provided by the AAVSO observers will provide this essential knowledge.

Finder charts with comparison stars may be created using the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP, https://apps.aavso.org/vsp/).

Co-Authorship

Observers are not eligible for co-authorship.

Additional Observer Input:

One to a few observations per night are requested. V is preferred; CMOS/DSLR (TG) and CV are also valuable. Visual observations are also welcome. Please submit your observations promptly, especially if an outburst is detected. V1159 Ori is typically around 14.9-15.6 V at minimum. Normal outbursts tend to reach around 13.5-13.7 V; superoutbursts can reach 13.0 V (as bright as 12.0 visually).
